Physical Education

Sport at Holywell

Sport is an important part of life at Holywell. We want to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

At Holywell, we employ a PE Specialist Teacher, Mr Day,  who delivers part of the two hours of timetabled PE and activities to every class each week. Extra-curricular sports clubs, either delivered by school staff or external sports clubs, are also offered to all children throughout their time at school.

Whilst children are in KS2, they are offered a range of fantastic residential experiences. In years 3 & 4, during the Spring Term, children have the chance to partake in a three day residential trip to Skern Lodge, Bideford and the Calvert Trust, Exmoor. Both venues offer adventurous activities including rafting,  climbing, high ropes, absailing, horse riding, tunneling & archery.

In the Autumn term, children in Yr 5 & 6 are offered the chance to partake in a five day residential trip to St George's House and an action packed trip to the city of London. Whilst St George's House offers adventerous activities such as hiking, surfing, rock scrambling, mountain biking, canoeing & team building activities, London gives the children the chance to experience many of it's famous landmarks and arts & culture. Visits include: House's of Parliment; West End Musical; climb up the Shard; West End Dance Workshop; National History Museum; and much more!

Swimming & Gymnastics are a significant part of the PE curriculum, which is why we give all children (Reception - Year 6) the opportunity to experience high quality coaching & state of the art facilities at Falcons Gymnastics Academy. In addition to this, children in Year 3 – 6 receive swimming lessons at the North Devon Leisure Centre.

We are very proud to be involved with the Park School Sports Partnership. This provides us with an abundant calendar of festivals, experiences and competitions including North Devon Finals which provide the opportunity to progress to county and national competition. We try to give the children the chance to experience as many different sports as possible, some of which include: Football, Cross Country, Aquathlons, Hockey, Rounders, Cricket, Tri Golf, Athletics, Tennis, Gymnastics, Tag Rugby, Dance, Orienteering & Ability games.

We are very proactive in arranging for sport coaches & inspirational athletes to visit throughout the year to deliver assemblies, taster workshops & programmes in addition to the 2 hours of timetabled PE. Some recent examples include: Chance to Shine Cricket; Nick Butter (Run the World); Level 1 & 2 Bikeability; England Handball workshops; Tarka Tennis workshops; Sports Leadership training; and Basketball & Marshal Arts workshops.

We are also very proud to be part of the 'Rising Stars in PE' programme organised by the Pilton Schools Partnership. Children in Year 6 that we identify to be gifted and talented in PE are offered the opportunity to take part in various enrichment days across the year including; high quality gymnastics & tennis coaching; basketball workshops delivered by an ex national player; a visit to the sports campus at Bath University; and a sports science session at the Woodland Sports Clinic.
